What makes a great mission statement?

Ten ingredients of a strong mission statement.

  1. It should provide a direction for an organization, challenging it to move forward.
  2. It should be clear.
  3. It should be concise (ie. no more than three sentences .)
  4. It needs to be professionally written, but in the voice of the organization.
  5. It needs to be easy to remember and recite.
  6. Although it is not permanent, it should be written for the long term.
  7. It shouldn’t be too restrictive, as change is always constant.
  8. It should help differentiate a firm from the competition.
  9. It should resonate with the appropriate target market(s).
  10. It should educate strategic alliances and centers of influence.
